Fr Richard will sing a Solemn Mass in the Ordinariate Use at All Saints’, North Street at 12.30pm on Saturday, 17th May, followed by light lunch, talk, and a tour of the restored church, led by Bishop Glyn Webster.
The celebration will conclude with Evensong at 3pm.
For many years groups of Anglicans felt moved by the Holy Ghost to enquire to enter into full communion with the Holy See of Rome whilst maintaining their own English traditions. In 2009 their prayers were answered with the issuing of the Apostolic Constitution Anglicanorum Coetibus by Pope Benedict XVI, which resulted in the foundation of three “Personal Ordinariates”, the one for Great Britain (Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham) being formed in 2012.
The Ordinariates follow the Roman Rite according to what is sometimes known as “Anglican Use” but is more properly called Divine Worship. This is an expression of the Roman Rite formed by English traditions, particularly those following the establishment of the Church of England. As a result, it contains prayers and language of the Prayer Book tradition, as well as influence from the English Missal and the Anglican Missal.
Anglicanorum Coetibus describes the Anglican liturgical tradition as “a precious gift nourishing the faith of the members of the Ordinariate and as a treasure to be shared”, a sentiment which perhaps best describes the spirit and intent of the Personal Ordinariates, to continue and live a tradition which fully bloomed outside of communion with Rome but has now returned to be realised and embraced by the Universal Church.
