The University of York Catholic Students Society has been on retreat at Ampleforth Abbey this weekend. Fr Richard took them to Rievaulx, the great Cistercian Abbey, where St Aelred was abbot from 1147-67.
St Aelred wrote a book 'On Spiritual Friendship', which shows how our earthly friendships lead us on to friendship with Christ.
Hence the importance of forming communities in our parishes and chaplaincies, so that we can form Christian friendships, helping us to live virtuously and bringing others to know the Lord.
